My Unpopular Opinions- Fall Edition

While Autumn may be my favorite season, I don’t love everything about it. Some of the more popular things people get excited for as the weather changes just don’t do it for me. At the same time, I enjoy some things that others may not. Here are a few of what I think are my unpopular opinions, let me know if you agree or disagree with my list!

I Hate Pumpkin Flavor

When I think of fall one thing that comes to mind is pumpkin, and not just jack-o-lanterns or the decoration, but the flavor. All the Starbucks lovers rush to order their pumpkin spice lattes or coffee drinks, and later in the season prepare to either make pumpkin pie or buy it from the store.

I can handle pumpkin spice flavored drinks on occasion, but pumpkin pie is something I cannot stand! I have tried multiple times over the years to see if anything has changed, put whipped cream all over it, and I just have to find a trash can every time. The texture is a no, the flavor is the biggest no. To me it tastes like rotten Spaghetti-O’s, am I the only one?

I Don’t Like the Smell of Cinnamon

Stepping outside on a cool autumn day, you breathe in the crisp, slightly sweet air of fallen leaves. Once you step inside, you decide it’s the perfect day to whip out a warm and cozy candle that you got in the fall section of the supermarket.

I love warm scents in candles, especially for the autumn season. One thing I don’t like about most of them, though, is the smell of cinnamon. Sometimes just spice, sometimes overpowering, always not my cup of tea. I am a little picky with scents and cinnamon is not one I go for.

I Don’t Like Rainy Days

Rain has never been on my side. I could be having the worst morning, and without ever looking outside, it’s raining. It seems like the sad rain in movies is not just a trope, but the story of my life. Somehow I am always in a bad mood when it is raining, and I despise storms.

If I want to go out and I see that it is raining, it is an instant mood shift. Rain is just depressing to me, and I really don’t like when my shoes get wet and the moisture soaks through my socks, so what is even the point of leaving the house? For naps, sure the rain can be nice and dark, but any other time, I could do without it.

I Like Scooping the Pumpkin Guts Out by Hand

This may grant me a Go to Jail card, but when the time comes to fulfill my seasonal bucket list of carving a pumpkin, I’m scooping out the seeds with my bare hands. It is a sensory experience that some may hate, but for me it is fun and I like to do things the more chaotic way most of the time.

The cold, wet, and slimy guts are just too difficult to scoop with a spoon, and while you need the spoon to scrape the sides of the pumpkin, you usually have to pull up your sleeves and reach down in there. Step aside if you are taking too long because you can’t stand the textile experience, I got it.

I Don’t Like Hay Rides or Corn Mazes

Every season, at least a couple corn maze photos pop up on my social media feed. The photos are cute, and it almost makes me want to take a trip the nearest corn maze, but then I remember why I never go, and it is for a couple of reasons.

I feel like these places are for children, and while children are great, too many of them in one place start to overwhelm me. Running around, yelling, staring at you for whatever reason (why do they always stare?). Then there are the younger kids who are off of their schedule and get tired and cry, and honestly I’d do the same thing.

Where I live, the weather really doesn’t cool down until late October, so when all of these corn mazes and hay rides open up, its still pretty hot. On top of hot, hay is itchy! I am allergic to hay and even feeding my guinea pigs makes my hands itchy and red, so it’s best if I just save a headache and stay away from these perfect photo-op places.

Halloween and Thanksgiving Are Better Than Christmas

I will be completely honest with you all on this one: I think it’s the music. Right after Halloween, I start to hear a little jingle of a bell, and I groan and sigh and I want to hide in a hole. I do not like most Christmas music, I do not like when people talk about putting their Christmas tree up months in advance, and I do not like people overriding American Thanksgiving for Christmas.

I say this because I really enjoy the community around Thanksgiving. Family coming together and eating amazing food, spending time with each other, and being grateful. It is not about what you “want” it is about being happy with what you have. I enjoy the Christmas holiday when it is December, and not a day before. Call me the Grinch!

It Is Not Cold Enough

As I mentioned earlier, the weather in Arkansas doesn’t start cooling down consistently until the end of October or even November. Some years I had to bundle my entire Halloween costume inside a jacket, and other times I was sweating from house to house.

Either way, once the Autumn solstice hits I want nothing above 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I want to wear my cozy outfits before I need to bring out the puffer jacket.

Autumn Colors are Beautiful, Halloween Colors are Not

When you think of autumn and Halloween, the same colors may come to mind: Bright oranges, dark browns and blacks, yellows, or even reds. For Halloween, mostly orange, but there are some festive colors of the holiday that I will never buy decorations in.

Purple and green, that specific color combo is a hard no, especially when in their true vibrancy. What’s even worse for my eyes is that those two colors usually appear in stripes. My preferred vibe for Halloween tends to lean toward the vintage Halloween look of dark rusty and worn colors, not really witchy purples and greens.

Those are some of my “hot takes” on some popular Autumn things and activities. Do I deserve jail time?

  1. I don’t like caramel apples! Gross! 😂 Always felt weird about that combo so, no, I won’t judge your unpopular opinions. I agree with some of them. I don’t like super hot or cold weather and I definitely don’t like how early the retailer’s start stocking Christmas items. Seems like they do it earlier every year! And don’t get me started on scammy sales like Black Friday. It’s right around Thanksgiving too. Christmas can chill…bring on the season of gratitude. I’d take that all year long. 🍂🤎🍂
