Your Eyes

Here is a poem I wrote in my AP Literature and Composition class early last year. While I absolutely despised the poem unit we covered, I decided on one bored day that I would write one.

I titled it “A Fancy Love Letter”, however it is truly a poem. There is nothing fancy about the way it is formatted, that is beyond my skill level. I buried it away because I was embarrassed of it, because I believed it was cheesy and not good.

However, now that I am going through things to pack up, I love this poem.

So here it is before I change my mind again 😉

The way the light catches on the shore line,

Sending iridescent sparkles flying to the sand,

The way a pond under the shade of a large oak is cool to the touch.

From the surface,

It is impossible to tell if a puddle is only as shallow

As the land around it,

Or and endless sinkhole of deep-blue into black.

When I dare to enter,

I am swallowed into the abyss,

But the farther I sink,

The warmer the water gets.

The deceptive puddle goes from blue to black

To a blinding red as I reach the core,

And I am engulfed in the flames,

And I am held.

I am understood.

Deep into the forest and down the seemingly endless puddle,

Where no one will ever find me,

I am seen.
